FERPA

As a college student you are becoming independent as well as taking the responsibility for making decisions about your life. Disability Resources (DR) recognizes that you, the student, are our client and want to work with you regarding equal access and accommodations as well as keeping disability-related information confidential. This information includes biographical history, test data, grades, disability information, performance reviews and case notes which are used to decide appropriate accommodations to provide you with equal opportunities and access at college.Your educational records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and DR will follow these guidelines:

  1. You, the student, have the right to request accommodations, make decisions and request or view information kept by DR.

  2. You have the right to review your file and request amendments to information that may be incorrect or incomplete.

  3. No one has immediate access to your student file at DR except for the staff. Any disability-related information shall be considered confidential and will be shared with others only on a need-to-know basis. The faculty and staff may not need all disability-related information, only that information necessary to appropriately meet your disability-related needs.

  4. Information in your files will not be released except in accordance with federal and state laws or a court order.

  5. You may give written authorization for release of information from your educational record. Information will not be released without your written authorization, even to your parents. In fact, if a person calls the office to ask about you, the office staff will not even acknowledge that you are working with the office without your permission. Before giving this authorization, you should understand the information being released, the purpose of releasing this information, and to whom the information is being released.

  6. You should provide the DR office with a copy of your original documentation and keep the original for yourself. DR will not release or copy documentation received directly from an evaluator.
